Famous fans of olive oil produced in Olhão
The French first lady and the Queen Silvia of Sweden are appreciators of the gourmet olive oil Monterosa, produced by the von Rosen family in Moncarapacho (Olhão), which is sold directly in the press premises or online. The Monterosa company also has ornamental plants nurseries. This olive oil won’t be found in stores and even less in supermarkets. The von Rosen make a point on selling it "the old way" in the press, or by online orders.
Tourists from the Northern Europe who take guided tours to the plantation and press in the Horta do Félix, Moncarapacho, are the biggest buyers. Here, the visitors have the opportunity to taste this delicacy produced by artisan methods by the von Rosen family.
Last year, the Queen of Sweden payed a visit to the plantation and took home some bottles of the olive oil produced by her compatriot Detlev von Rosen, now aged 71, living in the Algarve for 40.
Carla Bruni, Nicolas Sarkozy’s spouse, is another illustrious personality to relish the Monterosa olive oil, told Detlev to Lusa news agency. He says that a close collaborator of the first lady, who lived in the Algarve, mentioned the product.
With 20 hectares of olives plantation, the Swedish former consulter hopes to have a production of 10 to 12 thousand litres of extra virgin oil, sold in five different brands – each from a different olive variety, for 25€/l.
According to Detlev von Rosen, the Portuguese people isn’t used to buy good olive oil for a high price, but abroad the product is on trend and is seen like any other gourmet good, as cheeses and wines.
This because the olive oil was exclusive of the Mediterranean cuisine until a few years ago, but now it is looked as a luxury product.
The plantation has a press which dates from “roman times”, but was recently modernised by the business man, who runs one of the tem existing presses in the Algarve.
Mediterranean plants boost exportation
The Monterosa company also produces ornamental flowers and plants in nurseries in the Algarve (Moncarapacho and Luz de Tavira) and Porto (Perosinho).
The product list is vast, and includes herbs, indoor plants, trees, shrubs, and many other species.
In Moncarapacho the company owns the Quinta da Cabeça, Quinta das Oliveiras, Quinta Canelas and Horta do Félix, which is an olive plantation. The Horta Viçosa is in Luz de Tavira.
In Vila Nova de Gaia they have the Quinta da Pena, to produce ornamental plants in greenhouses and outdoors.
