Portugal as alternative to North African holidays

The tourism board wants to attract tourists, and political instability in the North of Africa may provide a boost to Algarve tourism industry.

The riots and the political instability in several Northern African countries have led to many tourists being stranded at the airports, and many have cancelled booked holidays.

Algarve Tourism Board (ERTA) President Nuno Aires told the Lusa News Agency: “The tourism operation planned for the summer will inevitably be adjusted due to the conflicts in Egypt and Tunisia.”

“The Algarve has been positioning itself as an alternative destination and I can confirm that we have already established contacts with several travel operators.”

The two major operators, Thomas Cook and Tui, however, cancelled the winter operations to Portugal, so maybe the effects of the situation will not be immediate for the tourism in the Algarve. These travel companies will only restart their operations in April.

But the travellers who had been considering North African countries as a holiday destination this year but who have not already made bookings could potentially choose the region.

According to Nuno Aires, Jet2 is one of the companies redirecting passengers to Portugal, as well as for Spain, but others are following, as the negotiations processes advance.

The Portuguese Government has also sent letters to tour operators and airlines trying to convince them that Portugal is an alternative to the North of Africa.
