Portuguese wines awarded with medals
Portuguese wines scooped 153 medals in what is known as the largest blindfolded tasting event in the world.
The international ‘Mundus Vini 2012’ was held recently in Germany, organised for the 12th year by specialist wine and alcohol publication Meininger Verlag GmbH. This year 6,019 wines from 44 countries were put forward for appreciation, fewer wines than last year (6,029 were enrolled in 2011) but more participating countries (last year 42 countries were represented).
Portuguese wines smashed their previous award record of 139 medals in 2011; overall 1,875 wines were awarded, with Portugal ranking the fifth most awarded country.
The Portuguese Enoport United Wines group took five gold medals and ten silvers, being considered the best ‘Mundus Vini 2012’ European producer.
The jury was made up of 300 specialists from 46 countries, as required by the ‘Organisation Internationale de la Vigne et du Vin (OIV)’, which established the event as the largest wine ‘blind test’ in the world.
Meanwhile the publishing house , in cooperation with ViniPortugal, this week published its monthly magazine ‘Weinwirtschaft’ which features a special report on the potential of Portuguese wines to the German market in a piece named ‘Everything but Monotonous’.
Last year Germany imported a total of €34 million worth of Portuguese wines.
