Faro Airport wins Best Improvement Europe Award
Faro Airport in Algarve received critical praise for its overhaul after being awarded a prize for the most improved airport in Europe following a survey by the Airports Council International (ACI).
The Algarvian infrastructure scooped the title after undergoing a major transformation initiated in October 2011 when the airport was severely damaged after having its roof ripped off by freak weather.
Work was originally meant to be finished by last April, but finishing touches are still being made.
Improvements to the check-in area have been estimated to have cost in the region of €700,000, while work on the arrivals part of the terminal has been evaluated at €1.4 million.
Faro Airport Director António Correia Mendes commented: “The recognition that we have just received is an enormous initiative for everyone who works in this airport. This fact is even more relevant when the recognition takes place in the middle of a complex and challenging development plan. Being a very seasonal airport, with more than 5.6 million passengers per year, we are conscious that the recognition is not an objective in itself, but a step in a continuous improvement projects that, through an ever-better service, we and our passengers hope will keep us among the best.”
Its car parks and roads are still undergoing interventions, albeit completion works such as walkways and awning structures.
Of all airports that took part in the ACI passenger survey Faro was voted as the one that has had the greatest improvements made to it.
This latest accolade follows Faro’s achievement in 2012 when it was awarded a prize for biggest growth in global passenger satisfaction.
The awards are handed out following input from passenger surveys that determine world-wide benchmarks in Airport Service Quality (ASQ) and reward ongoing efforts to improve the quality of services rendered to passengers.
Faro Airport signed up to the survey, which also evaluates Lisbon, Oporto and Ponta Delgada, in 2006.
Ponta Delgada took the ‘Best Improvement Europe’ award in 2009.
The passenger satisfaction survey showed that Faro Airport evolved from a classification of 3.78 in 2010 to 3.96 in 2012, on a scale of one to five.
Among the many aspects praised at Faro during last year’s assessment were the availability of luggage trolleys, the efficiency of check-in staff, waiting times to check in and in passport control, flight information screens, terminal cleanliness, and the ease with which passengers can find their way around the airport.
